Seasonal Rug Care

Seasonal Rug Care

Rug care requirements shift with seasons. Understanding these changes helps you maintain your rugs optimally throughout the year.

Spring

Spring is ideal for deep cleaning. After winter's closed windows and tracked-in moisture, a thorough professional cleaning refreshes the rug. The warmer, drier weather also makes it easier for rugs to dry completely after cleaning.

Rotate rugs to ensure even wear and sun exposure. Check for any damage that occurred during winter—moth activity, water damage from wet boots, furniture indentations that need attention.

Summer

Summer's heat and humidity can affect natural fibers. Ensure good air circulation around rugs. In humid climates, consider using dehumidifiers to prevent mold or mildew.

Protect rugs from intense direct sunlight, which accelerates fading. Use window treatments during peak sun hours, or rotate rugs to distribute sun exposure evenly.

Fall

As seasons change, vacuum thoroughly to remove any summer dust and prepare for increased indoor time. Check for any pest activity before windows close for winter.

This is also a good time to address any repairs. Small issues corrected now won't become larger problems over winter.

Winter

Winter brings moisture from snow, rain, and wet footwear. Place mats at entrances to capture moisture before it reaches rugs. Address any wet spots immediately to prevent staining or damage.

Dry indoor air can actually benefit rugs, preventing mold and mildew. However, extremely dry conditions can make some fibers brittle. Moderate humidity (30-50%) is ideal.

"A well-maintained rug will serve your home for decades."

Regular attention throughout the year prevents most problems. The goal is consistency in simple practices rather than elaborate seasonal interventions.
